THE MUSICAL TIME CAPSULE This project is an experiment in digital archaeology and sonic rebirth. It all started with the discovery of a forgotten folder containing almost 1000 raw MIDI files, written by me between 2003 and 2008. Back then, I was composing using Emagic Logic Fun (the very first demo/freeware version that would later pave the way for Apple’s famous Logic Pro). For almost twenty years, those drafts remained buried in old hard drives as pure code. Today, I decided to reopen that time capsule. The track you are listening to, “Arpeggione”, was originally written and sequenced on September 18, 2008. I extracted that MIDI skeleton that had been in stasis for 18 years and resurrected it, reassigning every single track to modern VSTs and next-generation synthesizers. The composition, the notes, and the soul of the track are the same as back then, but the sound design and sonic impact are powerfully projected into the present. THE VISUAL AESTHETIC: CODE & GLITCH ART To accompany this new life of my music, I wanted a visual aesthetic that was just as raw, hybrid, and digital. Instead of editing the video in a traditional way, I programmed a generative algorithm from scratch (written in Batch code). I instructed the code to randomly fetch from my database of over 400 old clips, cut them into mathematical 4-second blocks, and merge them by applying Glitch Art, datamoshing, and CRT distortion filters. It’s an engine I built specifically to calculate the BPM and the exact duration of the song, generating an unrepeatable visual flow perfectly synchronized to the audio. Put your headphones on.
